Our donor of the month initiative is an opportunity to thank the special people who have shown incredible commitment to LIVESTRONG and also to give perspective to our staff, interns, clients and many visitors about who is supporting the Foundation and why they are doing so. In addition to having their story shared on our blog, the Donor of the Month will be featured on a wall in our Austin office, where the LIVESTRONG staff will be able to get to know our donors and share notes about how much these individuals mean to us.
April Donor of the Month: Shannon Bowman
Shannon is our donor of the month for April and was kind enough to answer a few of our questions about her background and her relationship with the Foundation.
LS: What is your occupation?
SB: The short answer, I am a credit analyst. The long answer, I am the Vice President of Commercial Surety Underwriting at Arch Insurance Group.
LS: What do you like to do in your free time?
SB: I travel quite a bit for work so free time is spent unwinding. Joe and I spend most weekends with our dogs at our home in the mountains of Highlands, NC, where I cook, enjoy good wine, spend time on home improvement projects and hang out with friends in the quiet and beauty of the Smokys.
LS: Can you tell us a bit about your family?
SB: Joe and I will be married 12 years this September. Depending on when you catch us, we usually have at least two dogs living with us and sleeping in our bed. Right now, that’s Emmie (Lab mix rescue) and Woody (Hound/Boxer rescue). I also have two gorgeous nieces who live with my brother and his wife in DC, which is where I was born and raised.
LS: Why is it important to you to give back? When did you first become a philanthropist?
SB: Both of my parents were public school teachers and, even given their limited finances, made a point of giving back to their students and their community. I learned by their example and made a point to start volunteering to my favorite causes while in college.
LS: Do you give in honor of anyone in particular?
SB: I give in honor and memory of my mom, Barbara Ann Russell, who passed away June 8, 2003 after a long battle with multiple myeloma.
LS: What is your connection to cancer?
SB: Unfortunately, I have too many connections with cancer: my grandmother, my mother and me, in addition to a number of friends and co-workers. Sadly, I’m not alone in having so many touch points to this terrible disease.
LS: In your opinion, what is the most important aspect of LIVESTRONG?s work?
SB: I LOVE LIVESTRONG‘s cancer navigation services. When someone is first diagnosed with cancer, it wreaks such chaos in your life. Just having a place to go and people to help with issues such as treatment options and concerns, insurance challenges and emotional support is so important!
LS/SB: Finish this sentence: To me, LIVESTRONG means? “HOPE!”
We want to thank Shannon for her incredible support of LIVESTRONG and for taking the time to answer our questions.
