For 17 years, the LIVESTRONG Foundation has supported programs for patients, survivors and caregivers by listening to their needs. Today we are excited to announce a major step forward in fulfilling our mission: the creation of the LIVESTRONG Cancer Institutes of the Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin.
This $50 million pledge, over ten years, supports an innovative partnership focused on building key elements of cancer care. This enterprise designed with cancer patients and survivors will deliver patient-centered care, the best teaching practices and collaborative research for the whole cancer community.
Patient-centered cancer care means treating the whole person – emotionally, physically and practically. It is about communication and coordination from the health care team and empowerment of the patient and caregivers. Put simply, the patient is at the forefront of every decision.
Putting the patient first has been central to our work for years, and I want to take this opportunity to thank all of those who have given their past leadership, investments, commitment and faith in our approach, to bring the Foundation to this unique moment.
As we look to the future, we hope you are as excited as we are for the impact the LIVESTRONG Cancer Institutes will create for survivors everywhere.
