CVS Puts Customer Health First

Today marks a significant milestone in the war against cancer and smoking.  CVS Caremark announced this morning that it will end the sale of tobacco products at its more than 7,600 CVS stores throughout the United States.

This landmark decision by CVS will curtail the availability of cigarettes and tobacco products and reduce tobacco-related death and disease.

While we have made tremendous progress curbing tobacco use during the past 50 years, the health burdens are still staggering:

  • Nearly one billion people smoke across the globe, including more than 42 million Americans.Over the last 50 years, more than 20 million Americans have died from smoking.
  • One out of three cancer deaths is caused by smoking.
  • Tobacco will cause almost half a million deaths in the US this year.
  • Smoking will prematurely kill 5.6 million kids alive today unless current smoking rates drop.

CVS’s courageous decision is a great illustration of how the private sector can lead by example in the fight against tobacco use and cancer.

The LIVESTRONG Foundation applauds CVS’s commitment to health and wellness and we encourage other businesses that sell tobacco products to follow CVS’s lead.
