Things to Consider About the Health Insurance Marketplace

This month provides a historic opportunity that will greatly improve the health and lives of many families, including those affected by cancer. New health care coverage is coming on January 1, and you have until December 23 to enroll through the health insurance marketplace to get benefits from day one.

It’s important that families look into their options as soon as possible and sign up for a plan by December 23 (which is less than 2 weeks away). That way, they won’t have to go one day longer than necessary without the peace of mind that an accident or unforeseen health problem can be properly treated and won’t cause unnecessary financial stress. This is especially important for cancer survivors, many of whom will qualify for coverage for the first time this year.

Important points about the Health Insurance Marketplaces:

  • If you have a pre-existing condition, insurance plans cannot deny you coverage.
  • Financial help for many is available, and consumers can find a plan that fits their budget.
  • All insurance plans have to cover doctor’s visits, hospitalizations, maternity care, emergency room care, and prescriptions.
  • All insurance plans have to show costs and what is covered in simple language.
