Often referred to as “The Rock”, Alcatraz is best known for being home to some of America’s most notorious criminals. During its 29 years of operation, the penitentiary claimed that no prisoner successfully escaped. A total of 36 prisoners made 14 escape attempts.
On Sunday, June 1, 2014, over 2,000 triathletes and relay teams will attempt to make the most famous jail break by participating in the 2014 Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon. This event is consistently ranked as one of the best triathlons in the country by numerous publications. The course consists of a one-and-a-half mile (2.4 km) swim starting near Alcatraz Island, an eighteen mile (29 km) bike ride, and an eight-mile (12.8 km) run. The run portion includes a notorious section called the “sand ladder” at mile five, a climb from Baker Beach back up to the road that is a combination of sand and about 400 uneven log steps.
The past year, our Team LIVESTRONG athletes competing in the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon raised $47,000 that helped fund critical LIVESTRONG programs. They swam, rode, and ran for something bigger than a personal record. They came together as a team on that frigid San Francisco morning to represent our foundation’s mission and the millions of people impacted by cancer. In return, they had the relentless spirit of a cancer-fighting community backing them every stroke, pedal, and stride of the way.
In 2014, we are calling on all cancer fighters to take on this iconic adventure and help raise funds for those in need NOW. Registration sells out within hours of opening every year. Round 1 of the lottery took place in early October and the final lottery round will take place on October 26th. There’s no need to play a game chance in order to compete in this event. Team LIVESTRONG has guaranteed entries available in exchange for fundraising for our cancer support services. Cancer fighters can register for this event at http://www.livestrong.org/events/1650/
