Football and Fundraising 101

Fall is here and it?s the time for pumpkin flavored everything, autumn colors, layered clothing, and FOOTBALL!  Love it or hate it, there?s no denying that football season offers creative opportunities to raise funds.  Here are some ideas that can help you channel the excitement of game day into raising money for your Team LIVESTRONG account.

Fundraising Squares – Squares can be played for any single game. Start off with an empty 10 by 10 grid. This will give you 100 Squares for people to choose from.  Depending on which game you are playing with, simply assign one team to the columns, and one to the rows. Now, start recruiting people to play.  Have players make a donation to your fundraising account for the total amount of squares they choose.  You can manually pass along the grid in a file, Google doc, or sheet.  There are also many services that allow players to choose squares online. Keep collecting donations until the grid is full.

Once all the squares have been filled, it is time to assign the numbers to each column and row. By playing online, this is as simple as a click of the button. For those using offline options, randomly assign numbers 0 through 9 to each column, followed by doing the same for each row. Now each square represents a specific score in the game based on the column and row numbers. You just need to wait until the game is played to determine who will be your winner(s). The winner can receive a gift card or service (car wash, winery tour, spa treatment, etc.) you get donated. A winner can be determined at the end of each quarter or final score. The winner is determined by looking at the last number in each teams’ score, and then matching those numbers on the grid and seeing which square intersects those two numbers.

Weekly Pick ?em – Pass out a copy of the current week’s NFL or college football schedule to family, friends, and co-workers. Each participant should circle the team they think will win each game, they should also write down what they think will be the total number of points scored in the Monday Night Football game. This will be used as a tie breaker if two or more participants pick the same number of games correctly. Be sure to have all entries turned in before the first game of the week begins and have the participants make a donation to your account for their entry fee. After all of the week’s games are complete, tally up the games each participant picked correctly, the player with the highest total wins. The winner can receive an item or gift card you get donated.

Tailgate Party – Tailgating can be a great experience for any game day. In order to get the most of your tailgating experience, you need to be prepared for the big day and know exactly what to expect. Make sure to plan ahead, show up early, find a good parking spot near a high traffic area, and know the rules. There are several ways to generate fundraising by tailgating. Supporters can purchase a pass to taste what you?re cooking. You can display a prize and sell raffle tickets. You can get a friend to taxi fans to the front gate for donations. Hold a corn-hole or horseshoe tournament and players can donate to play. Recruit sponsors to donate drinks and food. The possibilities are endless.

Watch Party – Hosting a watch party allows you to bring the tailgate and games to your backyard. Invite friends, family, co-workers, neighbors, anyone you feel comfortable inviting to your house. You can sell squares for donations and the prize can be item you get donated. You can whip up some gumbo or BBQ for an entrance fee. Make sure to have your donation forms and fundraising webpage URL available so your guests can donate with a credit/debit card.
