Team LIVESTRONG Crushes It at the NYC Tri

Whether you run, ride or tri in 2013, do it with Team LIVESTRONG. Visit for more information about events currently open for registration.

This past Sunday, over 3500 people participated in the Aquaphor New York City Triathlon.  They started the race by swimming a mile in the Hudson River, then biking close to 25 miles along Manhattan’s West Side highway, and finishing the race by running just over 6 miles in Central Park.  It was inspiring to see so many athletes persevering through the heat and humidity that even made cheering its own endurance event.

Team LIVESTRONG was well represented in the Big Apple with one of our athletes finishing his day on the podium.  Michael McCombs hails from Marlborough, Massachusetts and finished 3rd in his division.  A seasoned triathlete and college swimmer, he had the spirit of his two friends battling cancer pushing him every stroke, pedal, and stride of the way.  He can definitely look at his first NYC Triathlon as a success.

There were many accomplishments to celebrate this past Sunday.  It was the first ever triathlon for Tiago Machado.  He traveled all the way from Hawaii and is now preparing for the Honolulu Marathon.  It was a family affair for Team Roach as brothers Dan and Ryan raised over $4,000. The team’s top fundraiser, Sean McLean, raised close to $3000 and now has his sights set on the Philly Challenge.

Sean is the perfect example of the attitude that so many Team LIVESTRONG Athletes demonstrate.  In his words, “Although I have been fortunate in that neither my family, nor I, have needed to use LIVESTRONG‘s services, it is still a foundation and a program that I completely support.  There are many oncology-focused charitable organizations, but very few of them focus their efforts on helping patients to cope with their diagnosis and manage the challenges associated with it so that I feel my efforts on fundraising and training for their events result in a larger difference in the individual patient’s life.”

I express my sincere gratitude and thanks to all of our teammates that competed in the 2013 Aquaphor Triathlon. They competed not only for themselves, but for an entire community of cancer fighters.
