Michael’s Story: 24 Hours of Booty INDY

When Michael Brunsman started experiencing flu-like symptoms and persistent headaches he finally went to the doctor to get his symptoms checked out.  At the age of just 26, Michael was diagnosed with biphenotypic leukemia, meaning he had a rare combination of both Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) and Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML).

Michael immediately began treatment at the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center in Indianapolis.  He eventually completed a bone marrow transplant that was able to force his leukemia into remission.

Now, 11 years later, Michael enjoys his family and friends, works in management with UPS, and cycles anywhere from 20 to 35 miles each week.  His father often cycles with him, grateful for the time they have together.  He returns to the cancer center for regular check-ups, but his leukemia has fortunately remained in remission.

Michael, his father, and his wife are currently gearing up for their second 24 Hours of Booty ride.  24 Hours of Booty is a 24-hour cycling event that benefits the IU Simon Cancer Center and the LIVESTRONG Foundation.

Riders of all ages and skill levels complete as many loops as they are able on a 3.5 mile course around Butler University.  Meals, entertainment and camping are available throughout the 24 hour period in an area called ‘Bootyville’ on Butler’s campus.

The Brunsman family will again ride on the team Pedaling Cures, made up of survivors, doctors, nurses and employees of the IU Simon Cancer Center.  One of the most unique aspects of the event is that patients and survivors have the ability to ride with the doctors and nurses who treated them.

After last year’s experience, Michael knew it would not be his last ride.  Why does he participate?   “Knowing there are other patients out there just like me, I want them to know that they are not alone.  I want to provide them with hope and inspiration that there is light at the end of the tunnel,” he explained.

The second annual 24 Hours of Booty event will take place on June 28-29 on the Booty Loop around Butler University.  Register by visiting www.24hoursofbooty.org.
