The 2012 Bank of America Chicago Marathon had a record breaking year, with more runners participating and completing the marathon than ever before. I’m excited to say that this success also spilled over to Team LIVESTRONG, and made for an amazing weekend in the Windy City.
Our team was bigger than ever before, with 236 members and our fundraising is climbing past last year’s total, with more than $230,000 raised. We even added new events so that our Team could see even more of each other and share their stories.
Our weekend started out by hosting 150 team members and their guests at a dinner at Wrigley Field. The iconic Chicago landmark allowed our runners time to get their picture taken on the field, see the dugout, and even hear from LIVESTRONG advocate and Cubs first baseman, Anthony Rizzo. The next morning, we arrived early to Niketown, for some breakfast and exclusive shopping before the crowds. The team was really impressed with the newly renovated store and the VIP treatment before the throngs of other shoppers showed up.
Before we knew it was Sunday morning. Although slightly colder than recent years, the lower temps didn’t waiver our team’s spirit or excitement for the day. As our runners piled into Corral E, I could see how proud they were to be running in the Team LIVESTRONG colors and knew it was going to be a memorable race. The thing about marathons is there’s a lot that can happen over 26 miles which can make or break a good run. However, as runner after runner came back to the team tent after crossing the finish line, each one said the same thing regardless of their time.
Running with Team LIVESTRONG was about more than the time goal. It was about more than having to walk or hobble when running got tough. It was about more than the pain in their knees (hips, back, hamstrings, etc). Running with Team LIVESTRONG meant that this marathon was important for not only them, but their donors and the cancer survivors they were supporting through their participation. And because of that, not finishing just wasn’t an option.
Congratulations to the 2012 Team LIVESTRONG Chicago runners! Thank you for changing how we fight cancer one mile at a time.
We invite everyone to take part in a Team LIVESTRONG event in 2013.
