A Team LIVESTRONG NYC Marathon Story: Michele

The following is a Team LIVESTRONG story from New York City Marathon participant, Michele Flynn. Join Michele at the NYC Marathon in November. Can’t make it to New York? There are many events you can take part in with Team LIVESTRONG. Go to www.teamlivestrong.org to learn more about our run, walk, ride and tri events.

Why did you join Team LIVESTRONG?
I joined Team LIVESTRONG primarily after reading what my daughter posted on her Fund Raising page regarding me and the reason she decided to join Team LIVESTRONG and run the NY Marathon. When I had cancer in 2004, she was working and living in Columbus, OH and I was living in Cape Elizabeth, ME. She wasn’t able to be with me during my battle. At the end of her fund raising page, she states: “If my mom can run through cancer, I can run for it”. During 2004, I ran throughout the several months of surgery, chemo, and radiation. The Beach To Beacon race, organized by Joan Benoit Samuelson, is held in Cape Elizabeth each August. I had postponed by final chemo treatment in order to run the race.
My daughter, Maraga Flynn Martens, was by my side, along with my husband Bob, and a close friend, Bud Elliott.

What would you tell someone else if you were recommending that they join?
Just this past Sunday I received an email from a co-worker whose husband passed away that day as a result of brain cancer. We’ve all been touched by this disease and although a cure hasn’t been found, it will be.

What does LIVESTRONG mean to you?
If it weren’t for organization such as LIVESTRONG, I may not be here today to write this or run in the NY marathon in November 2012

What does the training, the event itself, and being a member of the team add to your life?

A couple of years ago I participated in the “Tri for a Cure” in South Portland, ME. Being a cancer survivor and involved in the Tri ended up being a much more emotional experience than I had expected.

Training for a marathon requires a great deal of focus, dedication, strength, and energy. I will be 64 in August 2012 so find this goal a serious challenge but I’m looking at this as another goal I’ll meet. Because I’m training in ME and my daughter is training in NY, we share our training schedules, how we are feeling, what our long runs are like. I’m looking forward to November 4th 2012 when I will be running with her and all the other LIVESTRONG Team members.
