A LIVESTRONG Leader Story: Nitin

LIVESTRONG Leaders are individuals that make a yearly significant commitment to those in their community affected by cancer by spreading the message of LIVESTRONG. They do this by fundraising, hosting events, bringing LIVESTRONG resources to their local hospitals and more. One of our amazing leaders from Dubai,AE, Nitin Tolani, talks about why he is involved with LIVESTRONG and what he is doing in his community to help spread the LIVESTRONG message.

What does LIVESTRONG mean to you?
LIVESTRONG to me means power and determination. It enforces the belief that there is life after cancer. Lance Armstrong?s story is an inspiration to many people around the world. The manner in which he battled cancer bravely, and went on to have an extremely successful career, is truly remarkable. LIVESTRONG helped me learn about the experiences of other cancer survivors, which has been very enriching. It emphasizes that no one is alone in the fight against the disease, and gives hope that one day there will be a cure.

Why are you a Leader?

I am a cancer survivor. About 3 years ago, I was diagnosed with bone cancer (Ewing?s Sarcoma) in my left leg and successfully treated. I consider myself very lucky because medical science has progressed considerably, and due to new limb-sparing surgical techniques, people like me now have an enhanced quality of life. This was only possible due to the efforts of various people connected to the field of cancer research. I realized that it is my duty to contribute something towards this noble cause as well.

What are you doing in your community?

My main aim is to spread awareness about cancer, because in this part of the world there is a lot of social stigma associated with the disease. I organized a fundraising event in my hometown (Bangalore, India). It was quite successful and got a lot of support from organizations/individuals. I also visited local schools to promote the event and addressed the children as to how they can get involved. It was a great learning experience, and I aspire to do much more in the future.
