We Run For More Than the Miles

I was recently asked by a woman battling cancer why I work at LIVESTRONG. I discussed the relationship I’ve formed with a family whose young son is a cancer survivor. And while that relationship is certainly special, it is but one relationship I’ve forged over the years with amazing people who I’ve met as a result of working here. Whether it’s the family of this young survivor or the single mother raising two children or the husband who beat all of his doctors’ odds and has now been cancer free for years, these relationships allow me the ability to witness firsthand the “Fight Like Hell” attitude that has delivered so many from the grips of a devastating disease.
This coming weekend, I’m thrilled to celebrate the relationships that inspire us by joining more than 95 Team LIVESTRONG runners for the 2012 Dick’s Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon.
So far, this team has raised more than $70,000 to support LIVESTRONG and our mission, programs, and services. Many of our team members are running to honor friends and family while others are running to honor their own fight. Regardless, everyone participating as a member of Team LIVESTRONG this weekend has forged an undeniably strong relationship with someone who boldly embodies the LIVESTRONG spirit and attitude.
So, it’s for those people that we run this weekend.
It’s for the 28 million people around the world who’ve been affected by this disease.
And it’s certainly for more than the miles.
