The following is from a LIVESTRONG grassroots fundraiser and crazy awesome runner, Jax Mariash. Jax has run every day for the last 364 days and logged over 3,000 miles in 54 cities, 15 states, and 2 countries along the mission in honor of her stepfather’s passing and all those affected by cancer. Tomorrow is the final day in her grassroots fundraiser and the 365th day of her mission. We salute Jax and all of those that donated to her efforts. Help us congratulate Jax in the comments section and check out her blog www.run365daysnarow.tumblr.com.
What is your name and where are you from?
My name is Jax Mariash and I am from Boulder, CO
How have you been affected by cancer?
Cancer has been weaved in my life through various ways through my closest friends and family. My grandmother, uncles, deepest friends and sister have all had different encounters with it. My stepfather passed away from cancer on January 22nd of 2009 and this was my biggest initiative behind my deeper involvement with LIVESTRONG.
How are you fundraising for LIVESTRONG?
In 2010, on the year anniversary of my stepfathers passing, I decided to sign up for Team LIVESTRONG and participate in the Chicago marathon on 10-10-10. After this initiative, I decided to take everything a step further and make up my own project to increase awareness and make an impact in the community for LIVESTRONG. This initiative is called the 365 run mission. I decided to attempt to run 365 days in a row. Below are the 4 underlying goals of the run mission:
- To continue to support the ten folks that I initially ran for with Team LIVESTRONG on 10-10-10: Eugene DeWitt, Leslie Wayne Mitton, Anne Holland, Samantha Minnis, Elexis Mariash, Nathan Long, Eddie Hall, Marla Swartz, John Holland, and Lance Armstrong
- To emotionally give back every day to those dealing with cancer. If someone is fighting every day for their life, or someone is supporting an individual that is fighting every day or someone is mourning the loss of an individual every day I will attempt to run every day for a year straight in their honor. They don?t have a choice so I won?t.
- To inspire folks to get out the door and move their bodies. If we all make an effort each day, even for twenty minutes, we will have a better chance at preventing disease in the first place. It all starts with you. If we all continue to make efforts to get America fit we will start to see results.
- In the end on the final run, to financially contribute to LIVESTRONG. This is my individual grass roots campaign site? http://laf.livestrong.org/goto/jaxmariash
What does LIVESTRONG mean to you?
For me, LIVESTRONG is a reminder each and every day that cancer is all around us and that together if we all focus on our health and wellness and are all out there trying to find a way to help those that are involved in cancer that we can make a difference. One by one we can help to make an impact to help those in need and create awareness. We all have a choice to step up and help and awareness is the first step. Additionally, one thing that really created passion for me with LIVESTRONG was the ability to help someone from the second that they were diagnosed with tools and aid, all they way beyond to when they are in remission and trying to get back on their feet.
Name one piece of advice you would give to someone affected by cancer.
This may be a faux pas, but I would tell them to LIVESTRONG. Each day, keep your head up and make the very best out of each and every minute. You are not alone and we are all here helping you out. I would tell them to be positive and inspire them to keep going out there and reaching for their dreams and to not give up.
In the Boulder area? Come out and show your support for Jax tomorrow night, May 3rd, to Avery Brewing Company. Party starts promptly at 5pm.
