Last Saturday marked the 3rd annual Huck Cancer Ultimate Frisbee Tournament in San Francisco, California, a Grassroots Fundraising event that benefits LIVESTRONG. For three years, friends, family, teammates and ultimate players have gathered for a one day tournament to celebrate life and fight cancer. Why? Well, as they will tell you – they still give a Huck! The tournament is the work of many people but inspired by Eric Arons.

Eric was diagnosed with grade 4 glioblastoma multiforme in July of 2009. Or as he says, “for the unschooled: a brain tumor.” The initial idea was to have a dinner party or something smaller, but Eric’s love for the game trumped all other plans and Huck Cancer was born. Last year Huck raised over $50,000.00, and they are rapidly approaching that again in year 3. Eric played on the championship team last year but watched from the sideline this year. He donned a camera and more staples then one could count around his left temple after having another tumor removed in the weeks leading up to this year’s event. This only proved to be a small bump in the road for Eric, who is someone who truly embodies the LIVESTRONG spirit. He was still able to enjoy watching first class Ultimate be played, laugh with participants, hug family and friends, and sit back and enjoy a day of celebration.

This year’s tournament was played on a beautiful day in San Francisco. It featured nine teams that included players from Washington, Michigan and a local youth team. The tournament was followed by a post-tournament party at 111 Minna. Huck Cancer is a great example of what friends and family can do when partnered with passion and spirit.
