Take a Swing at Cancer

When San Diego decided to host its Inaugural Swing Fore! Yellow Golf Tournament in 2010, it started with the heart and competitive spirit of a small group of LIVESTRONG volunteers that were all impacted by cancer.
Amidst an athletic volunteer base that seemed more involved in running marathons or cycling century rides for Team LIVESTRONG, a golf tournament seemed an unlikely pairing for an event. Golf? However, when a local San Diegan, and avid golfer himself, expressed his own personal connection to cancer and his desire to host a golf tournament to raise funds for LIVESTRONG, there was no hesitation in the group. The words “golf” and “San Diego” are synonymous in our community, and cancer became a common denominator uniting the local community in the fight against it.
The success of the inaugural event demonstrated how the power of sport can raise awareness and change in our community. Now, the 2nd Annual Swing Fore! Yellow Golf Tournament is on the books to fight cancer on Monday, March 26th in San Diego, California.

It’s all perspective. Perhaps we won’t be the individuals inside the labs finding the cure to cancer, but we can succeed as the team that raised the final dollar during this tournament that was needed to support a cancer patient in our community. This year, we are looking forward to leveraging the sport of golf at our 2nd Annual Swing Fore! Yellow event and help make an impact on those affected by cancer.
We are also proud to announce that, Dhani Jones, will be our keynote speaker at this year’s awards dinner! Jones, who is a LIVESTRONG Envoy and played for the Cincinnati Bengals, launched an initiative in May of 2010 called Bow Ties for a Cause, which creates bow ties to raise funds and awareness for multiple non-profit organizations. Bow Ties for a Cause has now generated over $80,000 for 10 different non-profits, one being LIVESTRONG. We are absolutely thrilled Dhani is going to be in San Diego to share his story with the Swing Fore Yellow participants.
