Feb 4 – World Cancer Day: Celebrate with Team LIVESTRONG

“Together it is possible.” That is the theme for this year’s World Cancer Day on February 4. I am reminded of a quote from the movie Soul Surfer when Bethany Hamilton said, “I don’t need easy, I just need possible.” Anyone who’s dealt with cancer will tell you it’s not easy. Many of them say it’s the hardest thing they’ve ever been through. That’s why it is so important to remember fighting cancer is too great of a battle to take on alone.
One of LIVESTRONG’s core values is: We know we can’t do it alone. Team LIVESTRONG embodies that value, uniting cancer fighters in the physical sense of running, walking, riding and taking on triathlons, as well as reminding us that we are all fighting on the same team, against the same opponent.
Have you ever noticed how many people you see wearing yellow LIVESTRONG wristbands? It’s a great reminder that we’re all in this together. Whenever I see one I wonder, “What’s their story? How have they been affected? What inspires them to LIVESTRONG?” This Saturday, World Cancer Day, I encourage you to strike up that conversation, ask for their story and share your own. It’s only by getting to know each other and working together that we will make an impact in the fight against cancer.
If you’re in the Davis, California, area, join fellow supporters and cancer fighters this Saturday at the Team LIVESTRONG Challenge Davis Kick-off Party. The event will take place at the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame in downtown Davis, CA from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. The Davis Bike Club will lead two group rides, a 30 mile out-and-back training ride and a family-friendly 15-mile loop. Both rides will begin at 8:30am and depart from the Hall of Fame. A complimentary breakfast and sample products from our sponsors will be provided, and we encourage non-riders, family and friends to attend as well. The Davis Farmer’s Market will be in full swing and there is plenty to do for everyone.
Not only will you have the opportunity to meet fellow riders, but you can learn about LIVESTRONG’s programmatic work in California. Guests will also get a preview of the 2012 course. On-site registration for the Davis Challenge will be available.
We hope you will join us because on World Cancer Day, and every day, it is important to remember that this is a battle being fought the world over, and our team of cancer fighters spans just as far. None of us are alone in this fight and by working together, we will win!
