Tougher Together: Programs for Survivors
by Brooke McMillan2 Comments
LIVESTRONG received some fantastic news. A generous donor has offered to match each dollar up to $100,000! Donate today at www.livestrong.org/TougherTogether.
This year LIVESTRONG gave grants to over 90 organizations to implement programs across the US focused on helping cancer survivors and their families. These programs were funded through our second annual Community Impact Project which replicates evidence-based programs that support people affected by cancer. This year we funded four programs two of which were:
LIVESTRONG at the YMCA Program:
A twelve-week, small group program designed for adult cancer survivors. This program fulfills the important need of supporting the increasing number of cancer survivors who find themselves in the transitional period between completing their cancer treatment and the shift to feeling physically and emotionally strong enough to attempt to return to their normal life or their “new normal”. The program is conducted outside of medical facilities to emphasize that LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is about health, not disease.
LIVESTRONG Promotores Training Program:
This program is designed to address the needs of Hispanic/Latino cancer survivors, LIVESTRONG created a cancer survivorship training curriculum to increase Hispanic/Latino community health workers’, otherwise known as Promotores’, knowledge and confidence on the physical, emotional and day-to-day concerns of cancer survivors. To date, LIVESTRONG has trained hundreds of Promotores across the country.
Listen to Senior Program Manager, Haley Gardiner and Program Manager Jordan Parks talk about the success we had in implementing these programs in 2011 and a sneak peek of what’s to come in 2012. Please make your end of year donation today and have your donation matched dollar for dollar! Visit www.livestrong.org/TougherTogether
