We have lost an inspiring and valiant member of our cancer survivorship community. Marci Campbell, co-Director of the LIVESTRONG Survivorship Center of Excellence Network site at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, passed away yesterday.
She had been living with – but not defined by – her colon cancer since March, 2010. Marci recently shared her perspective of cancer as a team sport. We all feel very fortunate to have been a part of Marci’s team and our thoughts go out to all of her team – her family and to her staff colleagues, students and fellows, and the many community members she worked with over the years.
Marci was Professor of Nutrition and the UNC Lineberger’s Program Leader in Cancer Prevention and Control research. She was nationally recognized for her work in promoting healthy behaviors, cancer survivorship, health communication, and dissemination research. She believed passionately in the power of the community, the importance of resolving health disparities, and the mentoring of students and fellows.
We will do our best to continue to support the work Marci began in partnership with the UNC program, and will dearly miss this tireless advocate to the cause we are all so passionate about fighting.
