Through the LIVESTRONG Leader program, we engage individuals across the globe who are passionate about and committed to making cancer a priority in their own community. LIVESTRONG Leaders are vital to the success of LIVESTRONG by helping raise awareness, recruit and engage others in the LIVESTRONG movement, fundraise and advocate to their elected officials at the local, national and global level. Below is an interview from LIVESTRONG Leader Vicky Fletcher of Provo, Utah.
What does LIVESTRONG mean to you?
LIVESTRONG means LIFE. Every life is important and precious…my life, your life, and the lives of our family and friends. LIVESTRONG means honoring those family and friends I have lost to cancer by continuing the fight against it. It means continuing to volunteer for organizations that are seeking cures and supporting survivors. I have learned life is not a race, but an amazing journey. Some journeys are long, some are short, but all are worth taking time to enjoy and live to the fullest. This disease has ended so many amazing journeys and threatens to interrupt even more. LIVESTRONG means fight for life.
Why are you a Leader?
I am a Leader because I want to make a difference in my community and because I believe one person can make a difference. One person’s voice and actions can influence many to become involved in a cause and when you have the help of many, great things happen. I believe we have a responsibility to be engaged in causes that work to improve the lives of everyone in our communities and throughout the world. We must continue to work together to eradicate cancer from our lives.
What are you doing in your community?
My goal as a leader in my community is to provide awareness, services, and hope to those affected by cancer and their families. I am involved in survivor group meetings, fundraising, helping others with their fundraising, and having awareness tables at events here in my community. I have met with public officials about cancer awareness and LIVESTRONG’s mission to inspire and empower all those touched by cancer. They have been receptive and supportive of my efforts. I strive to represent LIVESTRONG in a way that will further the foundation’s mission to fight cancer and empower those affected by it.
