The following is a Team LIVESTRONG story from a LIVESTRONG Challenge participant and leader of Team Bank$trong. There are many events you can take part in with Team LIVESTRONG. Go to our website to learn more about the run, walk, ride and tri events.
What is your name and where are you from?
Steve Moyer and Zelda Casparis live together in Sacramento Ca and both work for a great local company, American River Bank aka Team Bank$trong. Steve is an avid bicycle rider who commutes to work by bike every day and who got involved in LIVESTRONG San Jose 3 years ago with Zelda’s support.
In what event are you taking part in?
We are participating in the LIVESTRONG DAVIS event this year and are very excited because it is in our back yard. Steve is riding 105 miles and Zelda is riding 20 (it was going to be 45 but she will be wearing multiple hats on ride day for Bank$trong). For 2 of the last 3 years Steve participated in the LIVESTRONG SAN JOSE ride, 100 miles one year and 75 the next.
What is your cancer story?
Steve lost Alfred Thornton, one of his very best friends and his spiritual adviser to cancer a number of years ago. Zelda lost Coriene Fellers, her mom, to colon cancer in 2005. Our company has unwaveringly supported co-workers who have lost their fight against cancer; co-workers who have had family and friends impacted by the disease; and co-workers, family and friends who have fought cancer and WON! We are emotional and passionate about the LIVESTRONG cause. One of the strongest testaments to life is the LIVESTRONG manifesto. Attitude is everything! We experienced that attitude with Steve’s rides in San Jose and it is a Celebration of Life event!
“We believe in life. Your life. We believe in living every minute of it with every ounce of your being. And that you must not let cancer take control of it. We believe in energy: channeled and fierce. We believe in focus: getting smart and living strong. Unity is strength. Knowledge is power. Attitude is everything. This is LIVESTRONG.”
What made you become a part of LIVESTRONG?
So,when LIVESTRONG announced it was coming to Davis it was the perfect time for Steve to rally the troops at work and Team Bank$trong was born. Bank$trong started with just a few riders, we are now 26 riders strong! Bank$trong started with zero dollars and we have now raised in excess of $11,000.00 and still counting! Bank$trong needed a team logo, Steve’s daughter Amanda designed one and Bank$trong shirts are on their way!
Our mentor, Matt Florio (who is awesome) has done wonders with regular chats with Steve. Matt told Steve about POWER SPOT sponsorships and Bank$trong will be a POWER SPOT sponsor on ride day with over 30 employees volunteering. We set a goal to meet the $10,000 level for a company Lawn Tent and we will have a Lawn Tent. This is a very good thing as our very own, 93 year old cancer survivor, Georgia Presnell will be riding her stationary bike on July 10th and we want her to be comfortable and supported by her co-workers and family and friends. The Lawn Tent is also our gift back to American River Bank Management who has supported us 200%. Everyone participating in fundraising and volunteering for this event has caught the LIVESTRONG message and are living it daily! We have Bank$trong members who have gotten on bikes for the first time in a long time! It’s exciting to see people pull together and become a “collective we” working together to make a difference in the cancer fight! Steve is already plotting for ideas for next year’s event.
What is your one piece of advice you would give to a cancer survivor in your situation?
Consider all of your options and reach out to organizations like LIVESTRONG that can make a difference in your life. Knowledge is power. Laugh, love, live, and pass it on!
