The following is a Team LIVESTRONG story from a LIVESTRONG Challenge participant and leader of Team M-Power. There are many events you can take part in with Team LIVESTRONG. Go to our website to learn more about the run, walk, ride and tri events.
What?s your name, and where are you from?
I?m Pete Mandeville and I?m originally from North Smithfield, RI but currently residing in Wilmington, Delaware.
What?s your connection to LIVESTRONG?
I took on my first LIVESTRONG Challenge back in 2008 when my brother Marc was diagnosed with Stage IV colorectal cancer. That year I rode the 100 miles for him. The next year he was eager, ready and able, despite undergoing chemotherapy, to take up the 45 mile challenge himself. This however, was not enough for him. True to form with the quote by Henry Ford on the back of our team shirt, ?Thinking always ahead, thinking always of trying to do more, brings a state of mind in which nothing is impossible.?, Marc started Team M-Power with the hopes of vying with perennial powerhouse, Team Fatty, for the top fundraising team award in Philly. Yes, he wanted to win because competition was in his nature but he also wanted win because in doing so, he would help raise as much money and awareness for the fight against cancer that he possibly could. He brainstormed, organized fundraisers, recruited and inspired through his relentless energy, all while fighting his own personal battle and yes, he led M-Power to the top, winning the 2010 Philly Team Champion Award.
Tragically, less than 2 months after riding in the Philly Challenge, my brother lost his battle leaving behind his wife, Megan, 3 young children, scores of family members, students and a countless number of other lives that he had touched through his generosity, gregarious nature and incredible strength in the face of adversity.
My brother had a vision when he started this team and I was not about to let that damn disease take that away too. I have joined forces with his best friend, Scott Coleman, and we are keeping Marc?s vision alive. We are keeping M-Power alive so that Marc can continue to empower others to live life on their own terms.
In what event are you participating?
Along with over 100 family members and friends, M-Power teammates, I will be running and riding in the Philly LIVESTRONG Challenge this fall. In our own ways we will be riding for Marc and I know that he will be riding with us.
What does LIVESTRONG mean to you?
To me, Livestrong means fighting this disease with every resource we are capable of tapping into so that no one has to experience what our family has gone through. It means remembering those who have fought so bravely so that they may live on through the tears and smiles of the family they now look down upon from above.
