@Slavonia’s Challenge

Twitter is a beautiful thing! Mark Slavonia, also known as @Slavonia on Twitter, challenged Lance to ride up one of the steepest climbs in the world- Waipio Valley, Hawaii. The road in question gains 800 vertical feet in 0.6 miles at a 25% average grade, with steeper grades in sections. The reward? A $10,000 donation to LIVESTRONG. Lance met the challenge head on. Here’s how it all went down.

    Challenge: Mount Washington (NH) Auto Road Bicycle Hillclimb. Aug 20, 2011. $1,500 to the winner. $5,000 for breaking existing course record. 7.6 miles. Avg 12% with gradiants up to 22%. Tom Danielson owns the course record of 49:24. Tyler Hamilton was previous record holder.

    Hi Lance – Ride from Manchester to Boonville in Mendocino County, CA – first of the three mountains includes a grade of 3 miles @ 16% ; total length is about 25 miles.
