Dr. Varmus Visits LIVESTRONG Headquarters

Dr. Harold Varmus, Director of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), stopped by to visit LIVESTRONG headquarters today. Lance and the LIVESTRONG team had an opportunity to discuss our programmatic activities with Dr. Varmus as well as our advocacy efforts to make cancer a global priority. Dr. Varmus was in Austin to attend the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) Innovations in Cancer Prevention and Research Conference.

After the meeting, we had an opportunity to give Dr. Varmus a tour of the LIVESTRONG Cancer Navigation Center (LCNC). The LCNC will soon service people with cancer or at risk for cancer, with an emphasis on underserved populations in the Austin area. The center will not provide patient care, but will establish relationships with Austin-area physicians, hospitals, clinics and organization that provide cancer education, prevention, screening, treatment and support services to help people navigate access to those services based on their individual needs.

LIVESTRONG applauds Dr. Varmus for his vision and leadership for the NCI and we look forward to continuing our work together to improve the lives of people living with cancer.
