On Sunday, November 7, 2010, I will be in New York City to run my first marathon as a member of TEAM LIVESTRONG.
A good friend of mine?s mantra is ?to set goals in your life that seem unachievable?. My journey with LIVESTRONG started when I joined the staff in November 2004. Prior to working at LIVESTRONG, I never even ran a mile. It has only been in the last three years when I began to run with my co-workers. After completing the Austin Half Marathon this past February, I set an audacious goal for myself ? to run the NYC marathon and raise $10,000!
To me, LIVESTRONG is all about people. And there are so many people that have led me to make the commitment to run NYC this year:
?My grandmother, Laverne Selle, fought a lengthy and courageous battle with lymphoma. Grandma was the epitome of integrity and character and someone I strive to be like every day of my life.
?My friend, Dan Waeger, a valiant cancer fighter and man of strength and honor and whose legacy of a ?Will Win? attitude continues to inspire us all. He will live in my heart forever.
?My best friend?s mother, Helen Geihsler, who battled kidney cancer. She was a true light and without question one of the nicest people I have ever known. I strive to have the same faith, kindness and pure love she showed every person she met.
?My dear friend, Randi Rosenberg ? a beautiful young woman who bravely fought cancer and has left a legacy of service to her daughter, Alexandra and all of us who knew and loved her.
?And for my friends and family who continue to bravely battle ? you inspire me every day with your attitude, strength and perseverance.
The money raised by my fundraising efforts will empower people in numerous ways including:
Connecting people to resources and partners
LIVESTRONG at School
Educating and empowering school professionals to help students impacted by cancer
Online and Print Resources
Connecting people with exemplary materials to address their cancer-related concerns
LIVESTRONG Young Adult Alliance
Supporting over 100 organizations that meet the needs of adolescents and young adults with cancer
On November 7, I will be running in memory of Grandma, Dan, Helen and Randi and in honor of the 28 million cancer survivors in the world today.
Although the New York City Marathon registration is closed, you can still run as part of Team LIVESTRONG. The LIVESTRONG Challenge 5k is on October 23rd in Austin and the LIVESTRONG Austin Marathon and Half Marathon is this coming February. Sign up to be a part of this amazing team and to honor those you love affected by cancer.
