Why I Ride: San Jose

by

Thank you San Jose! Together you have raised $1,000,300 for the fight against cancer! There are many reasons why people take part in the LIVESTRONG Challenge. Below are a few of those stories.

  • Mary Craig

To all of our family and friends who have, are, and will fight cancer. We ride for you!

  • Reisa Babic

What an amazing and emotional day!

  • Rick Gomes

What a Great Day! This was my first ride with Livestrong and I cannot wait till next year! I rode with team Alone and Unafraid and met some of the most amazing people while riding and especially at the power stops. I am so thankful for the opportunity to participate in an event that is not only more fun than ANY ride I’ve ever done but also to help join the fight against cancer and share in the stories of the survivors and families of people fighting the good fight!
Thank you to all the great volunteers who make this happen you are truly amazing!!!!!!!!

    Hi Everyone!
The ride was awesome!!! This was without a doubt the best supported ride I have ever done! from the volunteers, the road signage (I didn’t even need my directions!), to rest stops (8 for the 100 milers! we stopped 3x), the SAG (we saw a sag car or motorcycle every 5 min!), the great positive energy from the riders, to the people who stood along the road to cheer us on and thank us for riding….just incredible great vibes!! Of course it was also an emotional one for everyone too.
The climb up Metcalf was painful! After 70 miles and the heat starting to hit (over 100 off the road up Metcalf)….I did not stop, but I was going very slow!! there were people cheering us on up the hill, a family with small boys who asked us if they could squirt us with squirt guns (oh please yes!!!), to a guy mimicking he was pulling us up by an imaginary rope (put a smile on my face!) then gave us a little push as we passed (No one refused that push!), to another guy who had these huge sponges and squeezed them on our heads/backs with ice cold water (thank you!! much needed!). I saw a lot of people walking their bikes on Metcalf, although my legs were screaming, I was not cramping so I knew it was a time for mind over matter….and I heard my son tell me ‘you can do it Mom! you’re almost there!’

here is my post from facebook:
Today I rode 100 miles in the LiveStrong ride to help fight cancer….I may have carried their names on my back, but it was they who carried me….I saw all their faces and heard all their voices encouraging me….you see this ride was not about me….it was all about them….and yes I cried for all of them as I crossed the finish line. We miss you and will always remember you all.

I started crying as we entered SJ…I really felt my loved ones all around me. If you ride you should consider this ride next year. There are shorter routes from 20 miles, 50 miles and 65 miles. If riding is not your thing, well I volunteered at a rest stop last year and felt the great energy from everyone that I did from riding…it is a lot of fun!
    Thank you again!!

I’m proud to have completed the 100-mile challenge…

In memory of my grandparents – Google, Pop, and Grampa, who didn’t make it… And in honor of my friends – Scott and Reisa – who did.

Thanks Reisa for all your hard work and inspiration in getting Team Reisa B together – and Thanks Scott for being here to torture yourself through 100 miles with me.

Crossing the finish line is something I’ll never forget.

Absolutely an awesomely, inspiring weekend for my husband Barry and myself. I was dx 12 yrs ago with stage 2 breast cancer, Barrys dad is battling prostate cancer and we honor the uphill battle fought by our young friend Jon Koch who was dx with colon cancer at age 12, and a brain tumor at age 16, dying at age 18. We have been here 3 years in a row-barry rides the bike and I spend 2 days signing riders up/meeting new friends who are “LIVINGSTRONG”. thanks for a wonderful community in the LIVESTRONG FOUNDATION and all of you (riders, volunteer, donors, etc )who helped me renew the courage to cont to make each day count. You’re awesome San Jose!
