Happiness Comes in 3's

by

June 7 is a very special day for our CEO Doug Ulman and for our good friend, Tony Hsieh, author of Delivering Happiness: A Path to Profits, Passion, and Purpose and CEO of Zappos. Doug is celebrating his 33rd birthday and Tony is celebrating the launch of his new book and what he hopes to be the start of a movement of Delivering Happiness. Tony and Doug share many values in work and life and both feel compelled to spread the word on living healthy, happy, and strong.

Tony is generously giving a copy of Delivering Happiness to anyone who donates $33 to LIVESTRONG. He is signing a copy for anyone who donates $333. With these donations also comes the chance (or multiple chances) to win a trip to New York City for the book launch on Doug’s birthday. Tony’s hope is to raise a money for LIVESTRONG while inspiring others with his message.

We invite you to read more about the book and take part in the Delivering Happiness movement and help us further our mission by donating to LIVESTRONG and sharing the book with others.

Okay, Mr. Hsieh has an estimated personal wealth of approximately $300,000,000 (or more) and we are supposed to get excited because he was to get OTHER PEOPLE to donate a total of $333,333?

To use an old Texas phrase, this project seems to be a case of “Big Hat, No Cattle.” It’s a hyped up PR campaign and little else.

I expected more from the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

Tony is giving the books away for free and has offered to help us raise money for the foundation through the 33 campaign.

    Dear Two time Cancer survivor,
First of all congratulations on TWO successful battles with cancer. I only had to fight it once and I am pretty sure I am not strong enough to get through another, so you have my complete respect. Further, as you posted on another blog, your seven year record of raising over $120K for charities is just as amazing.
However, I would respectfully ask you to rethink your post challenging Mr Hsieh’s efforts on behalf of the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Yes, it is pretty clear that Mr. Hsieh is a very successful individual. It is also clear that he is a generous man with his time and personal resources. How much and to whom he donates his resources is between him, the charities, and the IRS. HOWEVER, he is using his name, his company’s name and revenue from his book to RAISE FUNDS AND AWARENESS about cancer and cancer survivorship, specifically through the LAF. You and your amazing friends have used your time and efforts to ask others to contribute to your efforts on behalf of your charities, and now Mr. Hsieh is doing the same.
I am sure few if any of the folks you asked for donation asked you how much of your personal money you have donated to the fight against this terrible killer, and I think it is an unfair question to ask Mr. Hsieh about his personal charitable donations.
I think we should be thrilled this new effort is going on and that more awareness that is being raised to an even wider audience and perhaps new audience. The enemy here is cancer and ignorance about how devastating it is to so many people.
Thanks for listening and I hope to see you at a fundraising event in the near future!
Continued great health and thanks again for taking the point in the fight.
    LiveSTRONG!
    Jamie

I have been challenged MANY TIMES by potential donors as to how much of my own time and efforts I was putting into causes and fundraising. As I believe in leading by example, I have always been very open to people who have made these very valid requests.

When the subtitle of a new book is: “A Path to Profits, Passion and Purpose”, with the topic of ‘Profits’ mentioned first, I believe I am well within my rights to voice my opinions on this project.

As for surviving cancer, and supporting other family members and friends who have had the disease, I’m nothing special. If what I am doing inspires others, all the better. Let people be moved to action by what is being done, not by the person or people who may be doing these things.

I’m just doing what I have to do and doing my best to be there for people who need my help. Leave the applause, media coverage, and attention for those who crave such things.

Best of luck with this project. I hope (and think) you all should easily meet and exceed your goals.
