Eldon,

You are quite the amazing person. The love and caring you showed your wife should be an example everyone could follow. I am happy for your new wife and life ahead of you. My grandmother passed away from cancer in the 1990's. I hope to see a cure for cancer and end all of the suffering it causes people. Ride hard and livestrong friend!

Thank you. Reading this article brings back the bitter sweet memories of caring for my father in his last two years of struggle with colon cancer. I look on those treacherous times together as a sacred experience filled with high's and low's. It was privledged and honor to care for him.

Fatty,
I watched my older brothers heart break, as he watched his wife of 25 years slip away slowly. Cancer starting in breast and continuing until it was everywhere. 13 months and gone. He was an awsome caregiver to her and epitomy of love.
Because of this, I am now a care giver in an assisted living facility. The love we give these people comes back to us 100%. God Bless!

I know that as caregiver for a spouse afflicted with this horrific awful cancer that you give Most ALL of your Focus on them and their needs. The toll that it takes on not only them first and foremost but on your well being both physically and emotionally is beyond words. It is true that there really are no words to say when this amount of stress is placed on you as the caregiving spouse when ALL YOU ONLY REALLY WANT and wish for is that this disgusting cancer monster would just GO AWAY FOREVER and IMMEDIATELY from your most important loved one that you share your whole life with. YOU ARE A TRUE HERO AND DIVINE SOUL AND SPIRIT FOR PROVIDING THE BEST SUPPORT POSSIBLE FOR YOUR SPOUSE. You Deserve a Gold medal award.

Thank you for sharing your story, Elden. I can relate to many of the things you mention and you've given caregivers some wonderful advice. I've been my husband's caregiver since May 2006 when he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and it's the toughest job I've ever had in my life ... but it also has given me more blessings than I ever would have imagined. We're closer now than ever before, we're a team, we're best friends. There have been hurts along the way when friends disappeared because they "can't handle this" or work friends forgot I existed after having to leave my high-profile position in order to be able to take time off to care for my husband. It took awhile to deal with those emotions, but those were valuable lessons, too.

Elden, I have been a caregiver to both of my parents and watched Steve be mine - each side is unique in it's own way. I so agree with letting your friends help you. I think you have to get creative... I asked for some books and I received 100. I asked for some CD's of music to occupy my mind and I got 50. I talked about flowers and looked outside to see a friend and her church group planting yellow flowers to brighten my day.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts - You are amazing - looking forward to seeing you again in Austin!

Thank you for being so direct and straightforward. I have been my sister's caregiver for the past 22 months, of surgery, radiation, chemo, and now more of the same. she now has Stage 4 Esophogheal cancer, and its a scary outlook. I agree with your observation: we can all rise above our own fear of suffering, and just be with our loved ones as honestly as we can be. I find it important to be honest with myself about what I am feeling, not to deny it but not to fall apart either. Its a tricky place, but it sometimes is easier with practice. I Have met a lot of unbelievably brave heroes in the last 2 years, on both sides of the hospital beds.

Like you, I find biking a great medicine. But I also find sitting meditation really , really helpful. it can be very sad, hard, and challenging to just SIT with the pain, but it creates the infinite compassion that we need to be with our loved ones.

Beautifully put. As a new LIVESTRONG leader, I've been focusing this year's energy into fundraising as a means to build comradarie and a network of other like-minded folks so that next year, we can start volunteering time at local hospitals, institutions and family members that need help. One of the biggest concerns I, personally, have had is what I can do/how I can speak to people about it. Because I've never, thankfully, had to be in the role of caregiver, supporting a caregiver is a new area for me to venture into, let alone be an example for. Your insight and honesty is much appreciated.
