Preventing Skin Cancer in South Australia

by

LIVESTRONG Staffer Chris Brewer interviewed staff and volunteers from the Australian organization Cancer Council S.A. at the Tour Down Under. The group was handing out free sunscreen to fans and raising awareness of the importance of skin cancer prevention. Australia has the highest incidence of skin cancer in the world where two-thirds will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime. For more information about Cancer Council S.A. and the prevention of skin cancer, please visit www.cancersa.org.au.

I’d like to mention that we recently launched a new website aimed at helping patients keep an eye on their moles between doctor visits, in hopes of helping to catch melanoma in its earliest, most-treatable stage. Users can upload a photo of a mole taken at home with their digital camera and get immediate feedback about ABCD’s. They can also search the database for similar moles, and do a mathematical alignment to an earlier photo to see if anything changed. They can also share a photo with another user such as their dermatologist. If they see anything troubling, the idea is for the user to see a doctor right away rather than waiting for their regular visit.
