Call Your Congressman TODAY!

by

We have just learned that the House of Representatives will be voting on HR 1256, the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act on Wednesday.

This legislation, sponsored by Representatives Henry Waxman (D-CA) and Todd Platts (R-PA), gives the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) the authority to regulate tobacco products. The President?s Cancer Panel recommended that Congress and the President grant FDA this authority in its 2006-7 report Promoting Healthy Lifestyles. This legislation passed the House last Congress, but was not considered by the full Senate.

The LAF sent a letter to all members of the House of Representatives last week urging a ?yes? vote on this bill. Please urge your Member of Congress to vote for this bill by clicking here.

Just put my call in to Congressman Parker Griffith’s DC staff person, Kevin. The Congressman is a physician who specialized in Radiation Oncology for the treatment of cancer, and is personally committed to the fight against cancer. I will follow up to make sure Congressman Griffith knows the importance of HR 1256 to his constituents and the public health. Thanks so much for the heads up!

While I do agree that smoking is completely unhealthy, government control on many levels is just as unhealthy….if not more! They are already trying to gain control of our banks, the car industry and healthcare…..so what’s next???

The Congressional Business Office estimates an 11% percent decrease in underage smokers by 2019 if HR 1256 passes. This is good legislation that will decrease smoking and the cost of healthcare.

Christina, you need to get a clue. Firsat off, the government is trying to save the banks, the auto industry and healthcare. If you haven’t noticed… they all have been run into the ground by private management and are threatening the stability of our entire country. Try not to be such a partisan (your comment wreaks of right wing zealotry), and you may see things a little more clearly. Like this smoking issue… Smoking is bad and it kills people. Capitalist tobacco companies however only care that they sell their products. It is not in their design to insert empathy and caring into their work model. Therefore they need to be regulated. The alternative is to allow everything to continue as is. Essentially, an environment where tobacco companies push dangerous materials on a sometimes unsuspecting public using unscrupulous tactics in order to maximize profits. It is pretty simple to see as long as you don’t allow yourself to be blinded by the politics of it. (you seem to subscribe to the old standard ‘hate the government/live in fear of commies/private management is always the best’ school of thought) Note that smoking is still legal. This isn’t a ban. It is just an effort to make sure that a product that kills people is handled with respect to that fact.
