UPDATE On Lance's Condition

by

“In 17 years as a pro I have been lucky to avoid one of the most common cycling injuries. The crash has put my upcoming calendar in jeopardy but the most important thing for me right now is to get back home and rest up and begin my rehab,? said Armstrong. Astana Team doctor Pedro Celaya was with Armstrong at the hospital. ?Lance suffered a fracture of the middle third of the right collarbone as well as some bruises on his right hip and arm,? added Dr Celaya.

More information about Lance’s injury can be found on our sister website LIVESTRONG.com

I am so sorry to hear of the crash. For what it’s worth Lance, I have had a bad crash that involved torn soft tissue in a shoulder separation. The doctors had told me then, that I would have been a quicker recovery if it had been a collarbone break (if I had had a choice in the matter).

I am not a pro, but I love to ride and watch you ride. I feel your pain, my brother of the two wheels, and I have already begun praying for both your physical and mental healing.

How many times has un unfair event made you so pi%%ed off that you used that raw emotion to motivate you to new heights? My prayers are with you to ease the pain right now. My heart is with you to recalculate your path in the future. No matter what your 2009 race record ends up looking like, I’ll always be in awe of all that you’ve accomplished. Now hurry up and heal that bone !!

Lance, I feel so bad for what happened to you, is it possible for the Drs to pin the bone back together, I had it done to the bone in my arm after falling on the ice. It healed much faster than when i had a cast a few years before that. take care, I know you will not let this stop you, because you are the Man!

Lance I just broke mine in a recent bike accident. Trust me you will heal fast! Take care

    Cheryle

I broke my collarbone in a 2007 crash during a qualifying race for the TdF predecessor. To ride in France, I had to do another qualifier a few weeks later while broken.

I was 43, you’re younger. If you want to continue, you can do it. Courage!!!

What is it they say in Hollywood (you’d know better than I)? There is no such thing as bad publicity, or something like that? Well, they’re talking about you on ESPN, and you’re all over the internet. Where am I? LAF.org. And I’m reading about the global fight against Cancer.

  • Calfee3

Lance – to paraphrase LA’s War …14 years at the top, not winning all the time, but THERE, not the first guy dropped, not in grupetto all through the year…
This new role doesn’t suit you. Its not your character to support other’s plans during the race and it distracts you. You’ve never had an injury like this before in a race because you’ve never been in a position like this in April.
Please take care – but come back and win #8.

  • Tanita (Melbourne,Australia)

    Hi Lance,

The minute I finished the last page of your book, the report came on our news that you had broken your clavicle. What’s with that!!!??? I’m a nurse and your storey explains to me the look on some of the patients faces, so thanks. I also now feel like I have to suck it up and move my ass when I run compared to what you and other riders do and go through. So, look after your self, no more breaking clavicles and good luck in the Giro and the tour. I’ll be watching (at 1.30 am here!).

    Luv Tanita.
P.s Pls be kind to Cadel, Stuart(Ogrady) & Robbie

you’re my hero.. taught me how to pick myself up after a fall, brush the dust off my knees and .. get back on the bike!

wish you the very very best.

  • Tom

    Lance,

You have inspired me to go out and compete in Triathlons this year. I was going to do my indoor training while you pushed yourself to compete in the races leading up to the Tour De France. With you out I have lost my ambition. Give me a glimmer of hope you will be back. I know that is what I am going to need to push myself.

    Get Well Soon,

    Tom

  • Jeff Harry

    Lance,

You’ll be back–no pain no gain. Like many others, I hope to see you back at the tour, you inspired me to move on (cancer survivor, same place as yours) and eventually we had a son, post cancer, against all odds, his name is Lance Harry…in any case, get better and get back in the saddle, we’d love to see you in the tour. If not, you’re still numeral uno in my book.

    Jeff Harry–Kingsford, MI

  • Gregory McGehee

    Lance,
I have seen you crash hard and come back with great determination such as when the bystander’s bag caught your handle bar and swiftly took you to the pavement during one of your many Tour victories. Challenges that stop others are mere speed bumps to the greatest Tour rider in history. Don’t take a risk in the Italian Tour. By the way, I don’t have travel plans to be in France for the Tour, but look forward to your return with much anticipation as do millions of other fans.
    Live Strong,
    Gregory

  • Jeff Anderson

I was hit by an uninsured drunk driver January in Austin and broke many bones plus my clavacal…my surgeons were great here and I’m sure your’s in Austin will get you back to ‘cycling shape’ in no time too!!! After reading your book about your battle with cancer, this will be just a ‘drop in the bucket’…welcome back to Austin…sorry it has to be under these circumstances….get well!!!

  • Brenda

Lance my prayers are with you.Get back fast as there are so many people that look up to you.

  • trena irving

I believe setbacks build character and you have lots of character so you’ll get through this. Everytime I’m out biking, skiig or whatever and it is a major struggle, I tell myself it’s a character building training and it’s those memories I pull out during a big race and then I go faster, harder and with more perseverance. All the best, you are my hero and you’re in my prayers.

  • Luca

All Italians hope you will be at Giro d’Italia!
We wish you all the best! You are able to win big battles! This injury is nothing compared to others!

We lost my mom to cancer last year and my father is stage 4 and in the fight of his life right now. Thanks for everything you’ve done and continue to do on behalf of the cancer community.

Buck up, cowboy! My husband recently broke his clavicle in two places requiring surgery, two plates and 8 screws. He made a sling from his spare inner tube and walked out of the trail about 4 miles pushing his bike!!
This happened over the holidays so he wasn’t able to see a doctor until 6 days later! I realize you are after all Lance Armstrong, but this sure has given me renewed respect for my old man…he’s 50!!

i recently had an injury from a bike fall in the fall of 2010. i was proceeding down a hill too fast of course.the road was bumpy so i had to veer into the opposing lane.the road is usually empty except on this day the road had a car coming up the hill.
to keep it short i had to ditch the bike to avoid hitting the car head on. my las helmet was cracked and my rear brake caliper bolt snapped. i was alive was the big thing for me. i would live to ride another day. i wish all the survivors good wishes as i had.
