Human Rights Leader and Former Irish President to Chair LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Summit

by

Today we announced that Mary Robinson, the first female President of Ireland and former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, will serve as Honorary Chairperson of the LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Summit. The Summit, to be held in Dublin, Ireland August 24-26, 2009, is the landmark event of the LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Campaign, an initiative to address the burden of cancer worldwide. The Summit will bring together world leaders, non-governmental organizations, corporate leaders and individuals who are making new commitments to cancer control.

?I have always viewed healthcare as a fundamental issue of human rights. It is estimated that about one-third of cancers can be cured if detected and treated early,? said Robinson. ?It is up to all of us?governments, non-governmental organizations, cancer survivors, all concerned individuals?to see that detection and treatment are offered to as much of the world?s population as possible. Through the LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Summit we will make great strides towards making this a reality.?

LAF President and CEO Doug Ulman said, ?Mary Robinson embodies the LIVESTRONG spirit of selfless service and leadership for the sake of positive change in our world. She has been a tireless advocate for issues at the intersection of health and human rights throughout her career ? and we share the view that cancer control is at its core an issue of human rights.?

    Hi,

My brother Declan is battling cancer for the last 2 years and the prognosis is not good, I would like to know how he or a family member could attend.
I live in Australia and have been a supporter of Livestrong foundation since Declan was diagnosed, infact this weekend I am entered a Relay for Life walk over 24hours to raise funds for Cancer research.

Go Mary I know you will make a difference.

    Livestrong!

hi. first of all congrats to lance for his performance on ventoux and in tdf (and getting me off my ass and cycling again!). i live in ireland and will travel to the summit in dublin. however, i would like laf to implore the irish government to reconsider their despicable decision to backpedal on a cervical vaccine programe at a cost of ?50 million (i believe) due to the recession etc etc. not implementing this programme properly now will result in suffering for many women at a later date coupled with an ultimate greater financial cost to the taxpayer. no doubt the irish health minister mary harney will be on the stage shaking hands with lance for the photo oppertunity when in reality she should be bowing her head in shame.
