Mexico?s leading health organizations are making cancer a global priority

by

The LAF and National Cancer Institute of Mexico (INCan), brought together more than 30 leaders from Mexico?s leading voices on cancer and public health for a roundtable event yesterday to discuss the burden of cancer in their country.
The meeting comes two days after Lance met with Mexican President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa to encourage support for the LIVESTRONG Global Cancer
Campaign in Mexico.

?We have clearly established the opportunities and hopes here in Mexico about how together we can mount a better fight against cancer,? said Dr. Alejandro Mohar-Betancourt, Director General of INCan and co-sponsor of the roundtable. ?There is absolutely no way we can better address cancer if we do not join forces ? society, government, NGOs, health institutions, oncologists ? that?s the clear way to go.  Mexico is ready to join forces to make a better world for people who receive a diagnosis of cancer.?
Attendees discussed the root causes of stigma in Mexico, including:

  • Fear associated with receiving a cancer diagnosis
  • Belief that a cancer diagnosis is a death sentence
  • Low literacy and difficulty in reaching audiences in rural parts
  • Lack of trained cancer specialists and technicians who can interpret test results

The gathering Monday kicked off an ongoing dialogue and the agreements reached by the participants will form the basis for a national cancer awareness effort as part of the LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Campaign.
