My daughter loved “It sucks to be me!” from Avenue Q. Then Make-a-wish sent her to New York to see the play when her treatment was over. Cool!

I found Jo Dee Messina’s I’m Alright and Emerson Drive’s I see heaven. I also listened to Bob and Tom show to make me laugh. This would make my chemo go by faster for Hodgkins Lymphoma.

I found great relief and support by listening to anything by guitarist Pat Metheny. His music took me to another place when I was sitting getting chemo for Hodgkins Lymphoma.

I feel I have some unique insight into this question, as I started and have been expanding an ‘iPod music library’ at the chemo center (where I volunteer each week) for close to a year (Check the Internet Link from my name about this project, “Chemo Rocks!!”).

I have everything from classical to country to the movie “Wall*E” on these iPods, and it seems classical and country are the two most favored genres, though the recent ‘Coldplay’, ‘Maroon 5′ and ‘Matchbox Twenty’ releases have also gotten favorable reviews as well.

Personally, though I only went through topical chemotherapy, I have always found the work

“Andante Cantabile, For Cello And String Quarter” composed by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, as performed by Bobby McFerrin from the CD ‘Paper Music’ is the one piece of music that I can hear, and (after listening to it), feel the strength to keep moving forward.

Sometimes you just don’t feel so strong, but you know you have to keep on living for yourself and the people who depend upon you. Music has always helped me in that respect.

Elliott Smith is always very uplifting for me, though some feel his lyrics are depressing. I listened to a lot of him and still do!

During my sleepless nights of chemo, when nobody was around, I would put my headphones on and give Sugarland, “I’ll stand back up”,a gogo. That would rev me up a little.

On the “wallow in it” side (as opposed to the uplifting side) I used to listen to “The Wind” CD by Warren Zevon. I always favored “Numb as a Statue” while Spencer liked to put “Disorder in the House” on repeat at high volume.

Bob Marley’s “Everything’s Going to Be Alright” completely saw me through some tough days (ok, almost any Bob Marley can help during treatment). My chemo and cancer didn’t stand a chance! But, I do have to agree with the comments on Jack Johnson and Israel “Izzy” Kamakawiwoole — had me picturing that green or red “chemo” as a tropical elixir to get me well!

I wrote the song “Through the Darkness, Into the Light” for my wife Jane when she was going through chemo. She loved it. Turns out, a lot of other people like it too. I hope it, and the entire compilation CD titled Survivor Celebration, inspires people and gives them strength to fight. Nora Payne did lead vocals on the song and she really did a great job. There’s also an amazing guitar riff on the song!
