Greetings from Ragbrai

by

Greetings from Harlan, Iowa where Team LIVESTRONG set up camp after the inaugural day of RAGBRAI 2008. It was a great start to the week! Our team met in Missouri Valley Saturday night where our campground narrowly avoided a tornado-infested super-cell thunderstorm. The fireworks were incredible and we managed to wake up to a dry camp.

Riders started rolling out at 6am Sunday morning for the 60 mile jaunt to Harlan. Once out on the ride, we were treated to a mild day of weather and rolling hills on the road. Per usual, the Iowans rolled out the red carpet! Every 8-10 miles, towns were decorated to the nines and had more homemade food and drinks than one can imagine.

Willy and Tom and the crew drove on to Harlan and staked our spot in an idyllic park near the high school. Once again, our tented city was quickly built and day 2 of camp was set. Our team was treated to a nice chat from the mother of a local cancer survivor and then a great barbecue at the home of a friend of one of our team members. Day 1 was a huge success! Everyone took it easy Sunday night as Monday is the hardest day of the week – 80 or 100 miles with just shy of 6000 feet of climbing….and storms are in the forecast.

I am proud to be part of a team with so many amazing people from all walks of life who are passionate about fighting cancer. Our riders have raised just shy of $300,000 and have been amazing ambassadors of LIVESTRONG. It is going to be a great week here in Iowa.
